If you thought No. 9 Notre Dame was going to coast to an easy win over a Louisville team that finished 2-10 last season, the first half must have come as quite the surprise. The Irish lead 21-14 at halftime, but it's been a tougher struggle than the score might suggest.
If not for a sequence that saw three fumbles on three consecutive plays, we might still be tied. Louisville had the ball deep in its own territory with two minutes remaining in the half, and seemed to be trying to bleed clock when it fumbled and Notre Dame recovered. Notre Dame QB Ian Book fumbled the ball right back to Louisville on the next play before Louisville QB Jawon Pass gave it back on the very next play. The entire scene resembled two friends arguing over who is going to pay the lunch bill.
While that was the craziest portion of the first 30 minutes, it should not be overlooked that both teams racked up over 200 yards of offense in the first half and Louisville looks much feistier so far than it did at any point last season. In fact, after picking up 13 sacks in 12 games last year, the Cardinals had three sacks in the first half of this game. The second half promises to be interesting, at the very least.
